Acceptable Use Policy for students

Who this is for

This is for you if your school has given you a Kestrel account. It is written for students. There is a longer policy for staff, which says what a teacher or an office may do with the records they reach.

Your school gave you this account and your school decides what you can see in it. Your school has its own rules about using its computers, and you agree to those when you sign in. This page is what Kestrel asks of you.

What the account is for

It is for reading your own school record: what your school has chosen to show you, such as your timetable, the school's notices and messages the school sent you.

Your school decides which parts you see. Some schools show more than others.

What you agree to

Keep your sign-in to yourself

Your account is you. Do not let anyone else use it, and do not use anyone else's. If you think somebody knows how to get into your account, tell a teacher straight away.

Only look at your own record

You can read your own record here. Trying to reach another student's record is not allowed, and each attempt is recorded.

Do not share what you read here

What you see about yourself is yours. Screenshotting it into a group chat, or posting it, puts your own information somewhere you cannot take it back from.

Do not attack the system

Do not try to get around the sign-in or break the service. If you find something that looks broken, tell a teacher. Telling somebody is helpful, not trouble.

What we keep about you

Your school record belongs to your school, and Kestrel stores it for them. When you sign in and read something, that is recorded: who read it, what they read and when. That record of reading is how your school can tell you who has looked at your file.

Your parents or carers may have their own account, which shows them what your school shows a parent. Staff at your school can see that you signed in and what you opened, because that is part of the same record of reading.

You can ask your school for a copy of your own record, and you can ask for something to be corrected if it is wrong. The Privacy Policy says how, and your school's office can start it for you.

If a rule is broken

Your school decides what happens, the same way it does for anything else at school. Your school can stop your account signing in. Where somebody else's information has been reached or shared, your school may have to report it.

Who to ask

Ask your school first: a teacher, the office, or whoever set up your account. They know your record and they can change what you see.

If something about Kestrel itself looks wrong, your school can raise it with us at hello@seraco.io. We answer the school, because the record is the school's.
